Defining Characteristics of Different Tattoo Styles | Drawing for Tattooers with James Wisdom #Ep 66

When talking about different tattoo styles, it's sometimes hard to put a clear definition of a piece of art. We break down some of the defining characteristics of different styles this week and how to analyze and learn from seeing a specific style of art.

Live Interview with Gunnar

Gunnar is a contemporary tattoo artist who is well-known not only for his tattooing but also for his skills as an oil painter.

Style and Influence: Gunnar's tattoo work is often characterized by its vivid colors and neo-traditional style. This style combines the bold lines and solid colors of traditional tattooing with a more detailed and illustrative approach, often incorporating modern themes and imagery. His work stands out because of its depth, color saturation, and attention to detail.

Oil Painting: Outside of tattooing, Gunnar is also an accomplished oil painter. His paintings frequently reflect the same aesthetic as his tattoos, offering a unique bridge between the two mediums. The techniques and skills he's honed in oil painting have certainly informed his tattooing, allowing for richer color gradients and more nuanced shading.

Recognition: His dual mastery of both tattooing and oil painting has made Gunnar a respected figure in the tattoo community. He has been featured in numerous tattoo magazines and has been a guest at many tattoo conventions worldwide. Find him at the 2023 www.TattooGathering.com teaching and painting!

Connecticut Roots: Gunnar has ties to Connecticut, which is often noted in discussions about him. CT has a vibrant tattoo scene, and Gunnar's work has contributed to elevating the art form within the region.
